Food and Beverage

In Bhutan rice is the staple diet in the lower regions but Wheat, Barley and Buck Wheat are the staple food in the higher altitudes. The food as a whole along with rice, wheat or buck wheat includes Beef, Pork, Yak meat, Chicken and Mutton. Traditional Bhutanese cuisine always has spicy red and green chilies, fresh or dried.

The favorite dishes include Ema Datshi (chillies with cheese), Shamu Datshi (potatoes with cheese), Sikam Paa (dried pork), Phaksha Laphu (stewed pork and radish), Worsha Huentshey (dried beef with Spinach), etc. Along with these several Tibetan dishes are also popular like momos (steamed dumplings filled with cheese or meat), Bathuk and Thukpa (Noodles). Zaw is the common snack; which is toasted rice, Jasip (beaten rice), and Gayzasip (beaten maize). Doma (betel nut and areca nut with a hint of lime in betel leaf) is chewed by most of the Bhutanese; the offering of one is a mark of generosity and friendship. Ara (home brewed alcohol), Suza (salted butter tea), and Beer are the popular beverages taken by the Bhutanese people.
